There are many good essayists, like Erma Bombeck with her suburban humor, the literary sketches of William Maxwell, Dave Barry's self deprecating, oddball view of life, and so many more. There are moments in our lives that move us to laughter, anger, tears, nostalgia, and a whole gamut of emotions. These are the seeds of the essay. Create your own moments, share them with other writers, test your words and thoughts and give and receive criticism and praise. This is your chance to work out the kinks and streamline your prose, either for yourself or for publication.

Memoirs refers not only to essays, but novels, diaries, journals, etc. Memoirs are the moments in our past and our present that beg to be written down and remembered for ourselves and for future generations. Work with other writers or pen your thoughts or give and receive applause and criticism. You don't have to be famous to write your memoirs. Every moment is worth saving even if no one knows your name.
