It seems certain conservative groups do not like the movie Avatar because it deals with a native population rebelling against the invested interests of the human race. The religious right doesn't like that this alien race has its own spiritual structure based on deistic principles. Give me a break. I guess they would take "my country right or wrong" to the ultimate expression of "my species right or wrong."
This sort of thing might have played in a simular manner back in NAZI Germany with those opposing Hitler's policies being branded as "unpatriotic." I can see the uber-richtig voices of our society justifying the very same genocidal policies in the name of "Merica!"
It was rather refreshing to see US in the role of alien invader for a change, giving a glimpse at what is more likely than what we are used to with cinematic vehicles like War of the Worlds and such. It was also refreshing to see the "Indians" get the upper hand over a technologically superior and insensitive force.
I know this makes me seem like a tree hugging "G.D.Lib'ral," but I am really a realistic moderate. It's just that our best interests are better served through a self-sacrificial world view than that of omnipotent conquerors. That is one area in which I approve o fPresident Obama's world approach. The actions of his "posse" are another thing altogether; and, if he doesn't get THAT act under control, he will lose me and many others in the next election.
For the time being, however, both right and left-wing conservatives would do well to adopt the true liberal approach of listening to all sides of the matter and doing "the right thing" instead of that which seems to be financially expedient. Otherwise, there might be more of us joining the insurgents against the establishment. Afterall, if those banks and insurance conglomerates are NOT serving us, why should we continue to tollerate their continued existance?
I can hear a distant echo of "burn baby, burn."
