Circumnavigation

Circumnavigation

One stormy night, you cast off
my mooring cable and me, aye
hoisting sail to the prevailing Trades
to run
before winds of change. A decade

has past

and more since we watched
our dreams blowing
away to where we now call out
from land to sea and back again; but

years of beating
against the wind, tacking
from port to
starboard and back
again has gained us nothing, other
than a sad wisdom
as to where hidden shoals, reefs and whirlpools beckon
from off the well dredged channel. Maybe

I'm better off

coming about and running straight and true
before the wind, circumnavigating
till what went out can
come 'round
again.
